Definition of melanoma: A form of cancer that begins in melanocytes (cells that make the pigment melanin). It may begin in a mole (skin melanoma), but can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or in the intestines.
A technique called lymphatic mapping and sentinel-node biopsy - which looks for cancer in a few lymph nodes first - was better than a "watch and wait" approach in helping melanoma patients whose cancer had spread to the lymph nodes to live longer, according to findings presented at the 2005 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
